About
Ergao Dance Production Group

Initiated by Ergao in 2007, Ergao Dance Production Group (EGDP) is a contemporary performance organization based in Guangzhou and Shunde, China.

EGDP have constantly seen body as the core of artistic investigation and the objects of creation, using diverse strategies - theatre, film and video, site-synthetic, community dance, etc. - to illuminate Chinese social and cultural identities, sex, gender and other topics in absurd and grave way. Meanwhile, it's also a document library of films and body, which roots and grows in self-expression and local narratives, giving artists in southern China a platform for transit and exchange.

The representative works include the Butterfly Island, Disco-Teca, Kung Hei Fat Choy series, This Is A Chicken Coop, Virtual lotus out of socail media and so on. Recent works focus on mobility of new urban migrants in Chinese society, and the issues on the public nature of dance.

2024, Southern Dance House was initiated in Zuo Tan village of Shun De, supported by HE INTERACTION.

Artistic Director | Er Gao

He Qiwo, aka Er Gao, born in 1985, comes from Yangjiang, Guangdong. He graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Ever since he founded Ergao Dance Production Group (EDPG) in 2007. And now he is living and working in Guangzhou and ZuoTan Village, Shunde.

His artistic practice navigates the intersections of identity, gender, and culture, weaving fleeting moments of togetherness in the margins, forming a "Trans-family" — a gathering in a fluid space-time (Interdisciplinary Fluid Family). Adopting "community as a working method," he rejects the outsider's gaze that objectifies his subjects from building perspective. Instead, he engages directly and actively from a "dwelling perspective," immersing himself in their world.

His works often feature an anachronistic/queer body, pop music and dance, low-tech techniques, the gaudy everyday life and replicas of iconic landmarks in Southern China, complex emotional entanglements, all intertwined within these elements. Together, they form his response to the present: "site-synthetic".

His current major artworks include:
